How To Fix The Sony “for use with compatible battery only” Error

Find Sony Camera Parts

I bought 4 extra batteries for my Sony DSC-HX5. After a while when I would power on the camera with of the batteries the camera would give me an error “for use with compatible battery only” and then the camera would shut down. I didn’t think this was a problem with the camera since 4 of the 5 batteries (including the one that came with the battery) would work without error.

I did a google search for the error “for use with compatible battery only” and found lots of people with the problem but not very many solutions. It took some searching through the pages and I found that if the center pin is shorted by the other two pins it would reset the battery.

First I fully charged the battery. Then pressed a piece of aluminum foil over all three contacts at the same time to short the center contact. It took a few tries but I knew the reset took when I put the battery into the camera and it wouldn’t start up. I put the battery back into the charger. The camera charged for about 5 minutes, I then put the battery back into the camera and it started up without error.

  2. Hi. I tried the trick with aluminium foil, a headphones cable (cooper) and tin but nothing works. I get the same error over and over…

I got mine backup battery from DX, it says it has shortcircuit protection…
    How can I reset it?

    Thanks!

    1. Me again. Please someone explain step by step or with photos how to do it?
I’m feeling dumb because I tried many, MANY times :/

      Thanks in advance!

  3. I have tried three different batteries (all showing the same error in three different cameras) I did the charging batteries first, shorting them out, camera won’t power on, popped battery back on the charger and wait for the light to go out a few minutes later. then tried again but still end up with the same compatible error. Any other suggestions??? You are right… there isn’t much for solutions on the net. I even called Sony which was a waste of my time.

  4. The aluminum foil worked. I didn’t need to even recharge it. I just placed the foil on the contacts and put the battery back in the camera and no longer received the “for use with compatible battery only” error. Thanks so much!!

  5. Hi there just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading properly.
I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and
    both show the same results.

  6. Just fixed my sony dsc hx5v by unscrewing the camera. a bit of work must be said. tiny bits and tiny screws. Make sure not to loose em. Then in my case after removing the flash part the tiny internal battery became visible. Disconnect it for few seconds and the error message is gone 🙂 hope this helps.

  7. i’ve sony dsc-w520 camera is has got a problem with when I will start camera”for use with compatible battery only” massage show . I am trying to solve the problem.

  8. open up camera, locate the internal battery, disconnect or remove it and this will wipe the cameras memory clean from such error codes n ur done :-/

  9. THANKS! Your solution worked exactly as you described. It took a few times to get tin-foil to make full contact to short battery and then camera then had no pulse, I recharged battery for a few minutes and now I am going out to take some photos!

  10. Just wanted to express my thanks, this totally worked for me. Took me a couple of tries, but success! I can now use my old Cybershot again after daughter losing my charger for over a year and I was unable to charge the totally dead battery. Found the charger, charged the battery, but I only got the camera to turn on by plugging it into the computer. Unplugged it and got the compatibility error message. I did as instructed above and camera is now working as it should. I’m so glad I found this post. 🙂
