iPhone App Of The Week: GeoCorder

March 1st, 2009 Greg Smith No comments

Back in the day, I would use my PalmOS device and a bluetooth GPS receiver to log GPS track information for geotagging photos. That was a difficult set up to get working reliably.

Today I use a dedicated GPS logging device which is a simple small box with a few lights to indicate if it has a satellite fix. The problem with this device is it sometimes doesn’t record and I don’t find out until I get home that I have no GPS data.

Geocoder can make use of the GPS capability of my phone to record GPS track information and it has a display so I will know if it’s really recording or not and write it out to a GPX file. GeoCoder is free at the iTunes App Storeicon at the time of this writing.

geocoder.jpgSometimes all you need is to record a GPS track. You might be a developer needing some real-world GPS data to test your geo-app. Or just someone who want to record his movements for Google Earth.

All this is as simple as possible with GeoCorder. Push the Plus, start the recording. A sensitivity graph gives you visual feedback how accurate your recorded GPS data is.

Finally you can e-mail your tracks to any address in your address book. The GPX data is fully complete and in addition to the coordinates it also includes timestamps, altitudes and even horizontal and vertical accuracy of measurements.

Get it, while it’s free as introductory offer.

Stealth Bomber On Google Maps

June 1st, 2005 Greg Smith Comments off

Oops, looks like Google Maps via satellite has accidently taken a picture of a stealth bomber. It’s probably a not a big deal, since everyone knows we have stealth bombers and it’s not hard to figure out that they might be sitting at a military base. This photo also only shows one bomber, not a whole fleet of them.

No School Saturday

My Organizational Composition class that was scheduled for Saturday morning has apparently been canceled. I showed up to school this morning at 8am only to have the front desk lady call up the teacher and find this out. This is typical of this school. They still have it listed on the board that this class meets at 8am.

It’s cool that I don’t have a class on Saturday but it sucks that I’m now only carrying 8 credits, I didn’t want to carry less than 12 in any one semester. TIme is of the essence here. Had the school had their act together and told me sooner I might have been able to sign up for another class.

Anyways now I’m hanging out at the Satellite enjoying their free wireless.
