The Apple iPad Announced

Apple iPad

Apple announced their worst kept secret, their Apple tablet computer called the iPad. It’s exactly what what it was rumored to be, a oversized iPod Touch. The iPad will run all the apps the iPhone and iPod touch will run but it’s missing a camera and GPS. Apple says they got 10 hours of use out of it, it will come with WiFi but a 3G cellular data option is available (and unlocked).

I think every rumor, including the prototype pictures at engadget and interview with McGraw-Hill’s CEO and President (Update: McGraw-Hill might have been punished for making the comments about the iPad before it was released), were all sanctioned by Apple. It was just enough to keep the hype and Steve Job’s reality distortion field in place but not enough to actually reveal the device.

I can’t imagine I will purchase an iPad as soon as it comes out (which is not for another 60 to 90 days) I do hope that parts of it make it into Apple’s laptops before my next laptop purchase. I also was hoping for an iPhone OS 4.0 and iLife 2010 announcement.

iPhone & iPod Touch GPS: Plugs Directly Into The Dock Port

TwoModules

This guy is developing a GPS device that connects directly to the docking port of a iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s interesting to see his first giant prototype compared to the current version he has working now.

He will need a 1000 preorders to make the first production order and I suspect a jailbroken phone.

A Real Trojan Horse On Mac OS

October 31st, 2007 Greg Smith No comments

Intego is warning Mac users of a Trojan Horse on Mac OS X. Named OSX.RSPlug.A, it masquerades as a quicktime plugin that needs to be downloaded when watching porn. It then changes the DNS address on the users computer which points to more porn. MacOSXHints as a quick tutorial on removing the Trojan Horse.

Intego has warned about other malware on the Mac, only to be accused of overblowing the situation. The other warnings were more about theoretical attacks, this appears to be real. It’s only showing up on porn sites now, but it could be a prototype for use in wider distribution later.

This may just be the beginning of more attacks on the Mac OS as it becomes more popular.

Intel Preps Mac Mini Look-Alike

News that Intel wants to rip off the Mac mini.

A new Wintel prototype that openly apes Apple Computer’s popular Mac mini is due out this week, sources told Wired News, giving Intel a showcase to prove its chips are a match for anyone when it comes to tiny PC designs.

Working prototypes of the Mac mini look-alike running Microsoft Windows and based on Intel’s Pentium M CPU have already been built by Taiwan PC maker AOpen at Intel’s request, according to two sources in Taiwan’s PC manufacturing industry who have seen them.

What Could Have Been

This has got to be one of those “DOH!” moments, “PortalPlayer [Who made the iPod for Apple] was working with AIWA, a subsidiary of SONY,” the source said by IM. “AIWA was so close to finishing the product but SONY killed it. I saw the prototype. It was one of the coolest MP3 players I have ever seen.”…”The executives at SONY regret that decision, so since last fall SONY has more than half dozen products that would compete with iPod including some players from AIWA.”… “I also know another American company who was making hard disk + FireWire MP3 player but didn’t make it because the reference hardware was held at customs in Singapore for a couple of months… before the iPod came out.”

This is the sort of things they fire people for. Now they are saying that Apple could become the “Microsoft of music”. I hope not. It’s one thing to dominate but to be the “Microsoft” implies using heavy handed tactics and borderline legal/illegal strategies to wipeout competition. Hopefully Apple simply competes and has the best product.

iPod, iPod, iPod

Steve jobs has spoken about the future of the iPod. There is an article by David Pogue from January ‘04 and one more recent with Walt Mossberg in which he talks about the future of the iPod.

Per Steve Jobs: there will not be an video iPod because no one wants to watch a video on a little screen. I largely agree with that. There also a lot of difference between how the RIAA works and how the MPAA works in distributions, you can get your movies a half dozen different ways. Music has really only had 2 ways, radio and CDs. The iPod and ITMS are just adding a badly needed distribution method whereas there’s not much demand for that on the movie size. OK, I can agree with all of that.

It looks like the iPod is Apple’s PDA, which is disappointing. Though I wasn’t really ever expecting a real PDA (I’d sure like to get my hands on the prototype). Steve says that 90% of the people who do use them only use them for getting information out them and not putting it in. I guess I’m part of the minority because I use mine for data input as much as anything else. He also says that the cell phone and PDA are going to merge, and they already are doing that. But they have a ways to go before I’m interested in such a device.

One thing he didn’t talk about is what is shaping up to be the next trend for the iPod: Pirate Radio. There’s a hack for the Griffin iTrip to add an amplified antenna so you can broadcast your tunes at a much farther distance (against FCC rules of course). Now they just need to add a microphone to the iTrip and you have your own mobile radio station.

I’m looking forward to the next version, this 5GB is getting old.
