We're sure that has nothing to do with why the Post is arguing against consumer best interests while regurgitating the industry's positions on network neutrality almost verbatim.

Obama Speaks At My High School Tomorrow In Mesa, Arizona

February 17th, 2009 Greg Smith No comments

Update 02/18/09: View video and more news on this event from Channel 3 in Phoenix.

President Obama will speak at Dobson High School in Mesa, Arizona tomorrow. I graduated from Dobson High in 1992.

Apparently they announced it monday morning and people rushed to the school to get tickets. Obama will be speaking in the school’s gymnasium which holds about 2000 people but there were only 400 tickets released.

ronaz08 on YouTube has a video of his sons waiting in line on Monday which shows at least a 1000 people lined up.

It’s interesting that Obama chose the state of Arizona, where McCain is a senator. Obama apparently didn’t inform or invite McCain to the event. The other senator for Arizona couldn’t change his plans.

“That’s too late for me to change my plans,” Kyl said. “In any event I wouldn’t be speaking. I would be standing there while he’s announcing something that I know nothing about. The time to talk about these things is before the fact, not after the fact.”

Of course, there are protests being organized.

Although I don’t miss living in Arizona I might have planned a trip back home if I could have acquired tickets for the event.

    Phoenix’s Movie Style Dust Storm

September 13th, 2008 Greg Smith No comments

    SafariScreenSnapz001

I arrived in Phoenix on Friday night and just missed the huge dust storm that came through the city. It looks like something from a movie, the movie Stargate had a similar scene. We don’t get walls of dust like this in Albuquerque instead we get days of blowing dust.

Unfortunately I cannot find a way to embed their videos nor can I find a version on youtube so you will have to click through to their site to see the video.

    Why I Don’t Watch CNN

July 19th, 2008 Greg Smith No comments

On Thursday afternoon I was at Sky Harbor airport waiting for a flight from Phoenix to Albuquerque on US Airways. About 15 minutes to the flight boarding I notice everyone watching something on the screen and I can see “breaking news” and “US Airways” displayed. I get closer to hear and it’s the story about some pilots complaining about not having enough fuel.

How exactly is this breaking news? It might be news but it’s hardly breaking news. It’s just more evidence to me of sensationalism by the news network especially since it was broadcast on CNN’s Airport Network.

The girl at the US Airways counter had to make an announcement about the situation to calm everyone that there is enough fuel on the plane. Not that I exactly noticed people panicking.

I’m not taking sides here. I just don’t see an immediate danger that requires over hyping this story. Breaking news might be appropriate if planes were actually crashing due to not enough fuel. This was just stupid.

I don’t watch the news networks and I can barely stand to watch the local news anymore. Thank you Internet for giving me choices for news.

    Heat Wave

July 16th, 2006 Greg Smith Comments off

Temperatures soared into the upper 90s and higher Sunday from coast to coast, bringing out heat warnings, wilting athletes and driving others into the shade. The choking heat was expected to continue for the next few days, and the hot air was moving toward the East Coast, meteorologists said.

The heat in Albuquerque is nothing compared to Phoenix, as I always say. The humidity was still kinda high today making the swamp cooler not so effective. It still cools down pretty good during the night, however.

    Free WiFi For All

March 20th, 2006 Greg Smith Comments off

In the past week I’ve been to the Albuquerque SunPort, the Boise Airport, McCarren International Airport in Las Vegas and Sky Harbor in Phoneix. All have had Free WiFi. I’d like to salute you in those airports that made the decision to have free wireless. You make my time in these airports much better than would I had to pay for it (nothing worse than having to pay for it, and yes I’m talking about WiFi). In fact I’m writing this from McCarren now.

Phoenix is the only place I had problems with signal quality. I’m not complaning, I’m just saying.

    Mike Tyson Likes Pigeons

June 2nd, 2005 Greg Smith Comments off

Speaking of pigeons… Mike Tyson, yes that Mike Tyson the former boxer, apparently has a thing for them.

The former heavyweight boxing champion, who lives in Phoenix, stunned City Council members Wednesday by showing up unannounced at a subcommittee hearing and asking that they not impose new restrictions on the number of pigeons kept on residential property.

Most Dangerous/Safest Cities in the U.S.

November 27th, 2004 Greg Smith Comments off
These are the most dangerous and safest cities in America. Nothing in New Mexico showed up in either list. But I was surprised to see Phoenix show up in the top 10 for most dangerous of cities with a population of 500,000 or more. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale showed up under the most dangerous 25 list of metropolitan areas. (I grew up around those areas,)

    Arizona Dust Storm Pictures

August 16th, 2004 Greg Smith Comments off
These photos were taken by my Cousin (forwarded by my Dad, thanks Dad!). This is one thing Arizona is famous for. The area between Phoenix and Tucson gets the type of dust storms that you saw in the Movie “Stargate”. The area she was in was just south of Phoenix. I didn’t ask her permission to post these so I hope she doesn’t mind!
These are pictures from the Dust Storm on Friday the 13th. I had to pull off the highway because visibility was at zero. As you can see in the first two photos I was approaching the dust storm. It was about 6:00 in the evening or so and I was leaving the Ahwatukee/Chandler heading towards Casa Grande. Just thought I would share.
