New Mexico Business Weekly has an article on Intel’s Fab 11X build out. This is the factory I work for.

When Intel Corp. finishes upgrading its chip-making factory in Rio Rancho next year, it will operate one of the world’s largest clean rooms.

The company started a $2.5 billion upgrade to its Fab 11X manufacturing complex early this year to produce Intel’s next generation, 32 nanometer chip technology. The new chips are smaller and faster and consume less energy than Intel’s current 45 nanometer chip technology.

When the upgrade is complete, Fab 11X will include 400,000-square-feet of clean room space, said Tim Hendry, vice president of the Intel Technology Manufacturing Group and the Fab 11X plant manager.

“It will be the largest clean room operated by Intel globally, and one of the largest in the world in general,” Hendry said. “The corridor that runs along the outside edge of the clean room is a quarter-mile long.”

Sometimes I have to walk the distance of that factory frequently. It’s a good way to get exercise. Read the whole article at New Mexico Business Weekly.

  • New Mexico Independent » Schott Solar banking on public investment in sunshine – That Schott Solar is barreling ahead with plans to become New Mexico’s flagship solar manufacturing company, despite the current recession, makes sense considering where the company is coming from.

Dr. Gerald Fine, CEO of the North American branch of the German company, sees a dynamic in the U.S. now similar to what caused the solar energy industry to take off in Europe five years ago. Germany went on to become the largest consumer of solar energy products worldwide, and he predicts

  • Confessions of an Introverted Traveler – Features – World Hum – But I don’t seek people out, I am terrible at striking up conversations with strangers and I am happy exploring a strange city alone. I don’t seek out political discourse with opinionated cab drivers or boozy bonding with locals over beers into the wee hours. By the time the hours get wee, I’m usually in bed in my hotel room, appreciating local color TV. (So sue me, but I contend that television is a valid reflection of a society.)
  • Judge Orders Halt to Illegal Robocalls Selling Deceptive Warranties – Today Judge John F. The FTC filed the case yesterday, charging that the defendants were operating a massive telemarketing scheme that used random, pre-recorded phone calls to deceive consumers into thinking that their vehicle’s warranty is about to expire.

  • Steve Stucker Explains the Recent Night Winds in Albuquerque – We call these "back door fronts" because most fronts come from the west or northwest. When the cold air pushes up against the central mountains (Sandias/Manzanos) it is sort of like hitting a wall, or an air dam, thus the wind gets forced into and through the little passes, gaps and canyons in the mountains, causing breezy to wind conditions in ABQ. It wasn't windy everywhere this morning, ABQ had the strongest winds in the state. The pattern is just a combination of the placement of high pressure and low pressure, and until we get a big "kicker"—some big system that moves through and knocks these little systems out of our area—the same basic pattern will continue for the next week or so at least, not windy every night, but every few. Friday night is probably our next big blow. God bless…..ss

Palm Foleo Canceled

September 4th, 2007 Greg Smith No comments

I said the Palm Foleo was the death nail for Palm. Apparently Palm management thought so too. They are canceling it. Strait from the CEO himself.

To that end, and after careful deliberation, I have decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion product in its current configuration and focus all of our energies on delivering our next generation platform and the first smartphones that will bring this platform to market.

Wow. What the helll is going on at Palm?

Delusions of Grandeur has a preview of of Shiira 2.0, the Japanese open source WebKit based web browser. This next version is the next generation Safari that Safari probably will never be by adding many of the features that the iLife applications have.

Right now you can download Shiira 1.2.1 with little risk. It will use your Safari bookmarks so you don’t even need worry about configuring it.

Apple Pre Announces A New iMac

Anyone who follows Apple knows they are very secretive about upcoming products. However they now have on their iMac site a message stating that they will have a all new design out in September, ” Apple has stopped taking orders for the current iMac as we begin the transition from the current iMac line to an all-new iMac line which will be announced and available in September. We planned to have our next generation iMac ready by the time the inventory of current iMacs runs out in the next few weeks, but our planning was obviously less than perfect. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers.”

This is the first time I have ever known them to just come right out and tell everyone what to expect. Doesn’t give the Rumor sites much to talk about

Omniweb 5.0 Preview

January 1st, 2004 Greg Smith 3 comments

The Omni Group has put up a teaser page on their next generation web browser. I used Omniweb when it first came out. Allthough innovative for it’s time, it seemed to quickly get left behind. Now it looks like they will lead in innovation once again. One feature I like is the ablity to have site specific settings. This means I should be able to make web sites for work look like the browser is on Windows and the rest of the world can know that it’s a Mac.

Of course Safari still offers some benefits like bookmark syncing via .mac, but there aren’t many more (and who knows, maybe they will address these). Camino, once my primary browser, was a great browser but has fallen back in the developement department. Although the latest builds are seeing improvements.
