PNM Moving Massive Transformer Through Rio Rancho

December 19th, 2009 Greg Smith No comments

The local electric utility in Rio Rancho, NM is scheduled to move a gigantic electrical transformer through the city.

The transformer will be hauled by a massive, specialized truck that has 174 wheels on 24 axles and is the length of a football field, or about 300 feet. It is expected to take 8 to 10 hours for the truck to move the transformer about 12 miles from railroad tracks in Bernalillo, through Bernalillo and Rio Rancho, to the switching station currently under construction northwest of Rio Rancho.

It’s supposed to travel from the railroad in Bernallio, up 550 to 528, then from 528 to Northern Avenue to where the pavement ends. This isn’t far from my house.

It was originally schedule for Sunday however PNM doesn’t have all the road permits so it will sit on the truck until it’s moved. Hopefully I can find out when it’s been rescheduled to move so I can get some video of the event.

Update: from PNM

All permits have been secured. The transformer will be moved through Bernalillo and Rio Rancho beginning shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The move is expected to take 2-3 hours, given the minimal traffic at that time.

I was up for the move but it was too dark to record video with the gear I have.

Update 2: The Associated Press had a few articles on this event. Every single news paper in the country had the same article as the local news and TV stations. I did find a little original reporting.

Children Need To Be Taught The Truth About Dinosaurs

December 13th, 2009 Greg Smith No comments

The local TV news stations KRQE has a news story about a preview event for the “Walking with Dinosaurs: The Arena Spectacular” show at the Santa Ana Star center in Rio Rancho. The show uses a combination of actors in costumes with animatronics to show very realistic dinosaurs which can walk freely.

In the preview event the video very clearly shows that they have what is reported to be a baby tyrannosaurus rex who interacts with children. Although the tyrannosaurus rex is not real, The children are allowed to pet it like it’s some sort of giant two-legged kitten (I have a kitten, they act just like this). The fact is that the tyrannosaurus rex is a very dangerous species of dinosaur much like all dinosaurs are.

Clearly the producers of Walking with Dinosaurs do not want children and adults to know the truth. If a child was to approach a real tyrannosaurus rex in real life, like they are in this preview event, the child would most likely be eaten. Parent’s need to teach their children the truth about how dangerous Dinosaurs are because clearly the makers of Walking with Dinosaurs cannot.

Update: More details of the show are on the Rio Rancho Observers website.

More On The iPhone Balloon Tracking Application

October 2nd, 2009 Greg Smith No comments

The local TV news station KOB has more on the iPhone balloon tracking application. The app is written by Anthony Cardinale and is a real time tracking application. It’s being tested by 5 ballon pilots and chase crews at this years Albuquerque Ballon Fiasco, I mean Balloon Fiesta.

“At some point, every pilot could be using this, and we are going to have a free version that allows people to come to the Balloon Fiesta and load it up to see where all the balloons are in real time,” Cardinale said.

Might make going to the Balloon Fiesta worthwhile.

100 – 200 Laid Off At Rio Rancho Intel

January 27th, 2009 Greg Smith 1 comment

Today we got the news, 100 – 200 people will be laid off (or redeployed as they like to tell us) at Intel’s Fab11X, Rio Rancho. I won’t publicly discuss more than what the local news is reporting only that the management just got the directive and they haven’t quite figured out how they are going to go about it. We should know if we are in or out at the beginning of Q2 2009.

Update 1/28/08: 500 are being cut from the Chandler, AZ site.

Taking Pictures On Pueblos Prohibited?

A story on the local news says taking pictures of or in pueblos is prohibited. There’s several pueblos near Albuquerque and the Rail Runner goes through them. The train conductor attempts to stop passengers from taking pictures of the Pueblos while the train runs through their land.

What is their legal right to prohibit photography where it’s legal to photograph in every other public location in the US? Can they really do anything about it? What will the Rail Runner do if someone continues to take pictures?

Why I Don’t Watch CNN

July 19th, 2008 Greg Smith No comments

On Thursday afternoon I was at Sky Harbor airport waiting for a flight from Phoenix to Albuquerque on US Airways. About 15 minutes to the flight boarding I notice everyone watching something on the screen and I can see “breaking news” and “US Airways” displayed. I get closer to hear and it’s the story about some pilots complaining about not having enough fuel.

How exactly is this breaking news? It might be news but it’s hardly breaking news. It’s just more evidence to me of sensationalism by the news network especially since it was broadcast on CNN’s Airport Network.

The girl at the US Airways counter had to make an announcement about the situation to calm everyone that there is enough fuel on the plane. Not that I exactly noticed people panicking.

I’m not taking sides here. I just don’t see an immediate danger that requires over hyping this story. Breaking news might be appropriate if planes were actually crashing due to not enough fuel. This was just stupid.

I don’t watch the news networks and I can barely stand to watch the local news anymore. Thank you Internet for giving me choices for news.

KOB’s Breaking News Abuse

December 24th, 2007 Greg Smith No comments

It’s been windy as heck yesterday and today, which helped to make for some spectacular fires in the bosqe near Belen. Of course there’s evacuation, peoples property or worse is effected. I expect the news stations to report on it, but there a point where they go too far. Here’s my list of why it gets too annoying.

  • The overlay banner at the bottom of the screen causes the High Def programming to switch to standard definition.
  • The overlay banner at the bottom of the screen stays on constantly for what seems like hours. They need to just have it on for a minute then turn it off.
  • The overlay banner reports the same information over and over, with little or no change. Again, turn it off for a while if there’s nothing new.
  • The overlay banner tells me over and over how I can turn into the news station at the next normal broadcast time to learn more. Well no fucking shit sherlock, did I think you were going to forget about it? Lets call this what it is, a attempt to advertise your own ego inflated new show.
  • The current show is interrupted with a news person to tell us what the banner has been saying, and the banner is still running.
  • The current show is interrupted at the very end, just before the news broadcast, for breaking news and the ending of the current show is never shown. Since we couldn’t wait 2 minutes for the local news.

At this point I’m already annoyed with this channel for ruining the HD show I was watching and have switched to another channel or started watching something on the DVR. When it comes time watch the local news, I won’t be watching your dam channel.

Local News Report On Hot Air Balloon Crashes In Rio Rancho

October 11th, 2007 Greg Smith No comments

Check out this local news report of a balloon crash in Rio Rancho with some pretty graphic video. This balloon was taking part in the Balloon Fiesta this week. Overall, I believe the safety record of the Balloon Fiesta is pretty good but these crashes highlight just how little control the balloon pilots have compared to a plane.
