Now I have an excuse to jailbreak my iPhone again. Mini vMac is a Mac Plus emulator originally for OSX that has been ported to work for the iPhone. The software emulates a 4MB Mac Plus, Full screen or scrolling, Full simulated keyboard and Sound. You will need to have a Mac Plus around to get the ROM image from.

Blackberry Curve 8320

October 7th, 2007 Greg Smith No comments

heard about the Blackberry Curve 8320 a few weeks and and got very excited about it. It is of course a phone with a keyboard and PDA type functionality. It has one killer feature, it can make calls over WiFi and normal cellular networks and this feature is being offered by T-Mobile (who I am already with). This works great for me since I get a very poor cell signal from any of the carriers at my house.

This week Leo Laport posted a review of the phone. Of course, he compares it to the iPhone describing the Curve as not nearly as easy to set up or pretty to look at but has more functionality than the iPhone.

It meets some of my requirements to combine my phone and PDA into one, and has the killer wifi VoIP feature but it’s missing things that I use with my current phone. Sailing Clicker doesn’t yet support Blackberry devices, instead the developers are “holding out for RIM to add JSR82-support (Bluetooth) to Java in their devices”. Whatever that means, I doubt it will happen anytime soon. I not sure how well cross syncing between Outlook on a PC and a Mac will work. Finally, can you use make voice calls over wifi systems that require browser authentication?

Amazon only has two reviews, both positive so far. This indicates that it’s a very new phone. As tempting as this phone was to run out and buy right away, I think I will hold off and see what happens in the next month.

Everything Waits On Leopard

Mid Jump

I have absolutely no inside knowledge, this is just a theory of mine. I believe Apple is waiting to update everything and It’s all hinging on Leopard.

I think iLife’08 was suppose to come out earlier, but since Leopard was delayed, they had to fix it to work on Tiger.

A massive update to the iPhone is coming. The iPhone update will have 3rd party application support, better syncing, a notes application, etc. They will all require technologies in Leopard that Apple doesn’t want to give away.

The AppleTV will also have some major updates. Once such update could be Safari and the ability to browse the web on your TV (good by WebTV). One such feature will eliminate the need for a keyboard since you will manage and sync bookmarks from Safari on your computer. It also illustrates the need to have Safari on Windows

Apple is scrambling trying to get band-aid fixes in place so people don’t loose interest for the next few months. What do you think, am I way of base?

Apple iPhone In January

December 3rd, 2006 Greg Smith Comments off

From MacRumors, Kevin Rose says the Apple iPhone will be out in January.

  • Going to be coming out in January
  • All phone providers
  • “It’s small as sh*t”
  • Don’t know anything about the Operating System
  • The OS is supposed to be “cool”
  • Doing some unique things
  • Two batteries, one charger. One for MP3 portion and one for Phone.
  • 4GB ($249) and 8GB ($449)
  • Flash memory, Slide out keyboard
  • Maybe touch screen?

I think it will be called the iPod Phone (like iPod Nano, etc) and I will buy one.

Not Quite There With A Palm Phone

June 2nd, 2005 Greg Smith Comments off

PalmInfoCenter has some details on a Palm OS 6 (yes, OS 6 aka “Cobalt”) that could soon be released. Initially I was excited. Doesn’t have a keyboard, unlikelike the Treo, just a regular keypad. Good with me, I don’t need it. Screen is 240 X 320. Eh, OK. I could live with it, it’s tiny anyways. No bluetooth. Sorry, no sale here.

I rely on bluetooth for too much to not have it. Perhaps the actually released version will remedy this.

Apple PDA Rumors Again

February 16th, 2004 Greg Smith 2 comments
Rumors of a Apple branded PDA have surface again. The rumors have persisted for so long that Apple needs to come out with one just to make them go away. Granted, I would be the first one to buy it if it ever came out but it seems so unlikely at this point.

“According to this report, the device will run an operating system that is described as being “OS X-like” and is quite possibly based on Linux. It will have an unknown amount of RAM, but it will also have the same type of miniature hard drive that is used in Apple’s iPod line of MP3 players. Apparently it will use a clamshell design, with the screen on one side and keyboard on the other. Like many recent clamshell models, the screen can be rotated around and closed over the keyboard, allowing the device to be used as a tablet. Its touchscreen will have a HVGA resolution, and it will use Apple’s Inkwell for handwriting recognition.”

Linux? It might be”OSX-like” because it is OSX. I would think that Apple would have an easier time scaling down OSX then trying to make another operating system look like OSX and scaling it down. And if it’s a true PDA I think Apple would likely license the PalmOS. It seems logical that it would have the iPod hard drive in it. In fact I’m surprised no one else has already done this. The rest of the hardware sounds cool, and very do able.

It’s no doubt that Apple has been playing with prototypes for some time. I’m hopeful but skeptical that Apple will ever release it. My credit card stands ready if they do.

New Sony Clie UX-50

July 17th, 2003 Greg Smith Comments off

It was rumored that Sony would announce a new Clie on Friday and it looks like this is it.

The specs look impressive. Although it doesn’t use a Intel XScale processor it does have PS2-ish multi processor with an ARM926 based processor, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and a CXD2230GA graphics accelerator made by Sony. Will this be my next Clie?

It’s hard to say. I have a NR70V now and don’t use the Keyboard. Mainly because the keyboard sucks. It’s hard to type with it. I have a Motorola 2-way pager with a keyboard and have no issues using that. Maybe the keyboard on this would be better. It does have WiFi and Bluetooth. Two important items. But the camera isn’t very good. And I would really rather have a 2MP camera.
