  • New Mexico Independent » Schott Solar banking on public investment in sunshine – That Schott Solar is barreling ahead with plans to become New Mexico’s flagship solar manufacturing company, despite the current recession, makes sense considering where the company is coming from.

Dr. Gerald Fine, CEO of the North American branch of the German company, sees a dynamic in the U.S. now similar to what caused the solar energy industry to take off in Europe five years ago. Germany went on to become the largest consumer of solar energy products worldwide, and he predicts

  • Confessions of an Introverted Traveler – Features – World Hum – But I don’t seek people out, I am terrible at striking up conversations with strangers and I am happy exploring a strange city alone. I don’t seek out political discourse with opinionated cab drivers or boozy bonding with locals over beers into the wee hours. By the time the hours get wee, I’m usually in bed in my hotel room, appreciating local color TV. (So sue me, but I contend that television is a valid reflection of a society.)
  • Judge Orders Halt to Illegal Robocalls Selling Deceptive Warranties – Today Judge John F. Grady of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a temporary restraining order stopping telemarketing company Voice Touch, Inc., its principals James and Maureen Dunne, its business partner Network Foundations LLC, and Network Foundations principal Damian Kohlfeld from making any further calls in violation of the Do Not Call Registry and other provisions of the Telemarketing Sales Rule and the FTC Act. The FTC filed the case yesterday, charging that the defendants were operating a massive telemarketing scheme that used random, pre-recorded phone calls to deceive consumers into thinking that their vehicle’s warranty is about to expire.

  • Steve Stucker Explains the Recent Night Winds in Albuquerque – We call these "back door fronts" because most fronts come from the west or northwest. When the cold air pushes up against the central mountains (Sandias/Manzanos) it is sort of like hitting a wall, or an air dam, thus the wind gets forced into and through the little passes, gaps and canyons in the mountains, causing breezy to wind conditions in ABQ. It wasn't windy everywhere this morning, ABQ had the strongest winds in the state. The pattern is just a combination of the placement of high pressure and low pressure, and until we get a big "kicker"—some big system that moves through and knocks these little systems out of our area—the same basic pattern will continue for the next week or so at least, not windy every night, but every few. Friday night is probably our next big blow. God bless…..ss
  • Clearly not a craigslist fan – Meanwhile, the backpage.com (owned by Village Voice Media) “adult entertainment” section for Greenville, SC has about 60 ads for the last 3 days, many of which are quite explicit, quoting prices for specific sex acts, close-up photos of bare genitalia, etc , etc (Be careful, even the index page has photos that are not-safe-for-work).

Sin City Movie Review

April 11th, 2005 Greg Smith Comments off
Sin City is about:
an assortment of thugs, prostitutes, strippers, cops, vigilantes, corrupt politicians, psychopaths and the occasional innocent who exist in the shadows of the fictional Basin City, which goes by the nickname that serves as the movie’s title.

Not your usual movie formula. Sin City is not your usual movie. It’s about 3 Hero’s but doesn’t have a happy ending for all. The look is like a live action comic book that’s mostly black and while with some color. There’s some cheesy dialog, that seems like it was intentional. It’s not for everyone, but it was for me and I liked it. Another less positive review says:

Pervasive pagan moral worldview with murder, revenge, corruption, and prostitution, and strong Romantic philosophy that pits the individual against an evil society, as well as anti-Christian content includes two corrupt or evil priests, both of whom are murdered (one inside a confessional), and light moral element man risks life to stop a pedophile and end governmental corruption

WARNING: SPOILERS!

This movie is extremely violent. Think of any Quentin Tarantino movie but more so. One scene where Bruce Willis character rips the genitalia off a serial pedophile killer (who is also the son of the senator) then beats his head in with his bare hands till you just see a puddle. Of course the guy deserved it, but you normally don’t see such detail in a movie. People don’t just die in this movie like they do “in the movies”, they die like one would die in real life. Slowly in some cases and you get to watch it. It just shows you what a miserable place this Basin City is.

The look of the movie is very unique. Meant to look what a comic book would be like, it’s kind of like a live action animated film. People, you don’t take your children to it, and I have heard of people doing that. Stupid. Anyways, it’s black and white. But not like a normal black and white kind of a different look to that even kind of like it’s always night with high contrast. Yet there’s there’s some color in it and it’s smoothly blended in with the black and white in such a way that it looks very natural.

Mickey Rourke plays a big, ugly guy named Marv. One night he finds a gorgeous blond who treats him not like a big, ugly guy. She’s killed on their first night together and he’s framed. His mission in life is to now find her killer and who framed him. In the process he comes across a freak kid who eats prostitutes and the very powerful priest (who could have ran for president) who is behind him. Marv rids the city of this group of evil people and in the process gets the electric chair. Not a happy ending. (Mickey Rourke is excellent in this role by the way, this is the best character in the movie.)

Bruce Willis plays a cop named John Hartigan about to retire. His last task is to save a girl from a pedophile, which he does. Everything is against him including his partner. He gets framed for all of the pedophiles killings and spends 8 years in jail, but he saves this one girl who is forever in his debt. When he thinks she’s in trouble he signs a confession to get out. Turns out it’s just a trick to get him to lead the bad guys to her. He saves her again from the same pedophile, who by this time is a freak (and did I mention the senators son). Knowing the Senator will be forever after him for killing his son, John blows his brains out to protect the girl. Another happy ending.

Finally Clive Owen plays Dwight, who seems to be a normal guy. Until a ex-boyfriend starts making trouble for his girlfiend. They end up in Old Town which is run by the prostitutes (a deal with the cops keeps the cops out and lets the prostitutes police themselves, which also keeps out the mob and the pimps). Sounding like a place I want to visit more and more. Anyhow when the ex-boyfriend starts trouble in Old Town, he gets killed. Oh and he turns out to be a cop so thats just going to ruin the whole deal with the cops. Of course the Mob is behind the whole thing. Well, Dwight doesn’t die and they keep the mob out so I guess this is the closest we get to a happy ending.

All three main characters are intertwined with each other and the people they meet. But they never actually meet each other, they are independent stories. Sin City isn’t a pleasant place but there are “normal” people who aren’t corrupt and do all the normal things that you and I do. But how interesting would it be to watch them?

Follow Up to Dog Attack

September 11th, 2004 Greg Smith Comments off

Here’s a follow up to the dog attack that happened near my house and showed up on national TV.

A police report concerning the dog that apparently bit off a man’s genitals says that the man may have been using force against the animal. Rudolfo Ramirez, 25, might have been trying to forcibly open the pit bull’s mouth. The report also said Ramirez was wandering the neighborhood in only in boxer shorts. … “As soon as he hit the dog, the dog yelped and the guy got up,” Chacon remembers. “He was still alive but his inner thighs, genitalia, and lower stomach was all ripped away.” … The dog at the focus of the story remains at an animal shelter, as the search for its owner continues.

There was a point in which we thought the guy was sexually assaulting the dog.
