iPhone App Of The Week: The Oregon Trail
Oregon Trail was always one of my favorite games, I even have an Oregon Trail II 25th Anniversary edition game for Macintosh from 1996 in a nice wooden box. I was very excited when an iPhone version was announced and purchased it as soon as it was available. It took me a few weeks to get through it the first time, yes I admit I played it a lot while sitting on the toilet
The iPhone version comes with a number of changes from the original. It has a quick-start feature where you can start playing immediately but I decided to try playing at level, easy medium or hard. FOr some reason, the games wouldn’t allow me to play the hardest level until I played one of the others.
I really enjoyed the cartoonish graphics and mini games throughout while playing. For example when the wagon breaks down there is a mini game where you hit nails. There is also panning for gold and fishing among other things, but I could never successfully catch anything while fishing.
The most annoying part of the game is the load screens. It seems every time the game changes scenes it has to load and load and load. I realize this is probably a work around for the limitations of the iPhone but it’s still very annoying.
I highly recommend the iPhone version of the The Oregon Trail if you like games that take a while to play, just make sure you get to a save point before hitting that home button to exit. The Oregon Trail is $5.99 On The iTunes App Store
